Correspondence

We began negotiations with senior management on Monday evening. This took the form of sending three representatives from the occupation to negotiate access. After two meetings we decided to suspend this mode of dialogue in favour of inviting senior management to speak to the occupying group as a whole. In the spirit of openness, we publish below all of our email correspondence to date with senior management. We have also sent a open letter to all staff in response to the University Registrar, Derek Pretty’s mail-out regarding the occupation. This is our most recent open letter to the VC.

Dear David,

The group has made the decision to invite yourselves to come and discuss
the occupation. We feel that the ’3 representatives’ system, whilst
interesting, was not particularly productive. So that you do not feel
outnumbered we are more than happy for other members of staff to be
invited. Ideally we would like this to happen around lunchtime so that
other members of staff could attend should they wish to.

Yours,

The Occupiers.

Dear Occupiers

Thanks for this.  I have to say that we are happy to continue to meet on
the basis that we have been meeting (the ‘three representatives’ system).
We are keen to meet, but on that basis.

Is lunch time or thereabouts still your preferred time to meet based on
this?

Thanks
David

Dear David,

As per our previous message, we are happy to meet as a group but not
using representatives. Our ‘negotiators’ have a very limited mandate from
the group as a whole, and as such, cannot really make significant
decisions on its behalf. Additionally, we feel that using representatives
tends to create hierarchies within the group and denies the group as a
whole of the possibility to partake in valuable discussion with
yourselves.

We hope that this makes sense.

Lunchtime or thereabouts remains our preference.

Yours,

The Occupiers

Hi Occupiers,

Just checking in with you to see if you or any of your peers wanted to meet with us as representatives of the group?  As I said, we are happy to meet but it would need to be on that basis, so I thought I’d check this again with you.

Many thanks

David

Dear David,

I hope that you have seen our open response to Derek’s letter and I trust you are aware of the overwhelming support we a receiving from students and staff. Please accept apologies for not making ourselves clear enough. As per our previous correspondence we are happy to meet you as group but not to send representatives. We would also like send a clear invitation to the Vice Chancellor, Eric Thomas to respond to our demands in person.

Yours,

The Occupiers
